Newsletter May 2011

Dear Friends,
It’s time for another newsletter from the Friends of Margate Caves group.

Visitor Numbers
What an amazing few weeks for Margate! The Turner Contemporary opened its doors on 16th April and visitor figures for the gallery within its first month have reached a staggering 79,000, with 14,000 people in the opening weekend. More importantly, the huge increase in visitors showed just how important Margate’s tourist attractions are. During the opening weekend, Margate Visitor Information Centre boasted 3,000 visitors to the new gallery-side location at Droit House; more than 1,700 dropped in to the historical Tudor House; and almost 2,000 visited Margate Museum in the Old Town. These figures highlight how important our campaign to save the Margate Caves is.
